Grammar 101

With the Facebook and the twitter and every other social network, we have become LAZY in that we use shorthand whenever we can. We type like dis bcuz we 2 lazi instead of typing like this because we have some sense and are actually educated. Now, the educated thing is an assumption. I am assuming that if you are reading this, you have, at minimum, a high school diploma OR at least took some kind of english class or something in grade school. I am not asking that people type in 18th century victorian english (?) or whatever but it gets to a point where i can't read what you are typing thus breaking the bridges of communication. I am not against shorthand but come on...I am NOT proclaiming to be some type of english/grammar guru. I did NOT major in english and sometimes, i do make these mistakes myself, but i correct them. I have put this on my FB status a couple of times but i feel i must reiterate some things..

1. There IS a difference between THEN and THAN. I am really surprised at the number of people who don't know which to use when. It irks me to see this common mistake everywhere
ex. I would rather go to Lounge 33 THAN venu on sunday.
ex. I went to the barbershop THEN i went to the mall.
Seee? Simple. Learn it, use it rightly. PLEASE.

2. saying "I am" is not the same thing as saying "am". I believe you mean "I'm"?

3. It is, it's and its.
ex. it's going to snow tonight = it is going to snow tonight
ex. i love its shirt.
two different things!

4. There vs Their.
do i need examples for this one?

5. Spelling mistakes. We are not all spelling bee champs here but please learn how to spell the basic like 'unnecessary' or 'tomorrow'...seriously.

6. Your vs You're
sigh...
ex. Your momma has big hair!
ex. You're getting that big promotion huh?

7. Me, myself & I
ex. My sister and i are cooking
ex. My aunt is taking my brother, my sister and me (NOT I) to the zoo!
ex I am going to treat myself ( not Me) to a spongebath

These are just some basic ones i could think of. I am sure there are plenty more but changing these little things can make a world of difference. I will add more as i see fit :)

peace&love

  1. Seriously, I was talking to this guy and it was like another language. He wouldn't spell ANYTHING correctly. I mean, simple stuff, he found some sort of "short-handed" way to write it. And sometimes, the "short-handed" way was longer than writing the word correctly. Not only is it annoying, but it's hard to understand and a major turn off. C'mon son!
