Romance. A word which now seems like a dream. An idea. Something which has to be worked on for it to become reality. Romance today seems like the impossible. I'm not sure i've been living long enough to know what real romance is but i'm pretty sure it died a long time ago. How did romance die? Wait, what IS romance? What does it mean to BE romantic? i'm sure if i talked to someone from an older generation, they'd have a different definition of what it means to be romantic. I feel like romance is ever-changing, always evolving and never constant.
To me, i think romance is a demonstration of how a person feels about another person. Romance is the actions which speak louder than the words. A man says "i l*ve you" and follows these words with gestures which SHOW that these words are true. There's a difference between someone who says i l*ve you and doesn't do anything about it and one who never says it and does all the actions of someone who is inl*ve. Being romantic doesn't mean spending tons of money on someone. Money is disposable. I believe when you feel something for someone, you become romantic as second nature. You don't even think about what you are doing to them because that's something you would do anyway. Romance almost becomes simple! a man pulling out a chair for a woman, sending her flowers randomly and just because he thought about her that day. A woman preparing his favorite meal because she knows he had a tough day. Recording a game of his favorite basketball/football team when he has to work and watching it together like he never missed the game. These are things...small gestures which don't require much spending to add meaning behind certain words.
Now why do i think romance is dead? Well, with today's generation, we live in a fast paced, technological world where almost everything and everyone is connected by two clicks on a computer. People don't even make rendez-vous' anymore because they can meet on skype or chat on FB. There is no face to face communication. To meet a woman/man, all one has to do is look them up on FB and they would get all the information they need to know. Dating can now be done virtually because you don't even need to see someone to be considered in a relationship with them. The words "i l*ve you" have become so casual that people send it to their significant others through TEXT message! Maybe i'm old-fashioned but texting someone how you feel about them is trash! That greatly undermines your relationship.
Long gone are the days when a man would have to write a letter to a woman just to ask permission to talk to her, not even of courting her. The art of writing a letter has become as ancient and antique as a typewriter. Writing a letter to someone today can be seen as weird or romantic, depending on who is doing the writing and receiving. With the way things are going, i am frightened at the thought of what my future children and grand children will define romance to be. Romance is now seen through a FB status and update.
Of course, there are exceptions to this little theory. There are still those people who go out of their way to show how they feel about someone. They are applauded for their efforts. There are still those men and women who understand that romance is still very much alive and can be translated into the things they do for their significant others.
