Before i began this post, i owe you an apology, my dear reader, for not putting up a post since the end of january. I appologize for the laziness and lack of motivation which has consumed my life and has limited my ability to compose a good post. With that said, i begin.
It is that time of the year again. Valentine's day is right around the corner. The grocery and department stores are full of "red sections" dedicated only to valentine's day. This holiday is one which wives, girlfriends and fiancees look forward to so that they can be showered with gifts. It is a day for people to really show that they care and love their significant other..........................................right.
i am completely WOWed at this day which i consider the FAKEST and most commercialized holiday in America after christmas. This so called holiday was built so that companies such as halmark, jewelers and the flower industry could make a profit in a less than thriving economy. America is a consumer driven society which thrives on capitalism. Because of this, it is a goal for marketing/advertising companies to fascilitate the selling of goods. How do they do this? by coming up with creative commercials, which not only sell you a product, but sell you an idea or a theme such as love, happiness and family which they know will make you more inclined to buy a certian product. Marketing execs thrive on "holidays" such as valentine's day which focus on buying stuff for people. They consult advertising industries to come up with an advertisement which will air the day after Christmas reminding you that valentine's day is coming up and you need to spend! They then come up with an ad which says "Tell her you love her and can't live without her with these $40 bouquet of roses and this $300 tiffany's bracelet". I don't know about you, but that is not love to me. Some of you might say 'yea he definitely loves me if he got me tiffany's' but here's the thing: consumer habits have been normalized so much that we associate material possesions with real emotions such as love, an appology and happiness and don't see it as a problem. Case and point: A certian NBA star cheats, gets caught and later gets a $4mill diamond to say he's sorry. This doesn't mean she all of a sudden felt better about the thing. I bet you they are STILL going through counseling. I went to the mall today and saw stuff up for EASTER! i mean come on...But i digress.....
Let me tell you other reasons why Valentine's day is a bunch of BULLSHIT:
This holiday is not for single people. Why, if single, must one not reap the benefits of this "holiday"? that is discrimination! Single people benefit from any other "holiday" except Feb 14th. (some) Single people all over the world feel extra single all because someone else hasn't appreciated them the way they see other people being appreciated. They start being envious of couples and seek companionship even though they were perfectly content with life before. Some people start to feel insecure about themselves because they are spending this time alone. Hotels make A LOT of money in this month around the weekend of the 14th. The 14th happens to fall on a long weekend this year so a looooot of money will be spent trying to plan a perfect weekend. Men get the short end of the stick because this day was clearly not made for men. In all the ads you see on TV, they are targeted towards women because advertising people know women spend the most money on dumb shit. This day encourages men and women to remove money from their wallet and spend, spend, spend.
I don't understand why "love" or the lack thereof, are stressed on this particular day. I mean i get it, but i don't get it. What about the other 364 days in the year? If you cannot show love on all those other days and then showing love by doing a grand gesture only on this day does not show love. I would rather a man love me all year and SKIP valentine's day than to never show his love ever and fly me around the globe, buy me diamonds and flowers on Feb 14th. I would prefer a man to surprise me with flowers on May 1st just because he was thinking about me all day or take me out to a great dinner (going dutch) on August 25th just because he wanted to take his woman out. That to me, is romance. Shit, i'd rather spend TIME with my significant other sans the flowers and dinner because time these days is as valuable, if not more valuable, than money. Spending time. That's all. I mean Febuary is a great month. It is the month in which the world was blessed with My birth. If you ask me, febuary is probably the best month in the entire year. I just don't think Feb 14th should be made a big deal. This day is a regular ass day to me, significant other or not.
You might read this post and think that i am anti-valentine's day and/or bitter because i may or may not have a man who wants to shower me with flower and roses. Whatever you are thinking, my opinion still stands and don't you worry about if i have a significant other ;)
peace&love
Hey great post. I'm glad you got back on, I was beginning to think I was doing this all by myself.
ReplyDeleteI have a post that I did on www.whowillsubmit.blogspot.com. Let me know what you think about it.
You took the words right out of my mouth...significant other or not valentine's day = BS if love is not shown on all other 364 days. Love me on Feb 5th, March 30th and Sept 27th...then I will know that you are serious
